1. How does VibeShares work?
VibeShares is the stock market for Ebay keywords/items. We take the 1000 most popular Ebay keywords for various categories such as "Ipod", and "Xbox 360" and make them into a stock (dubbed VibeShare). Stock prices are calculated from the current bid-to-item ratio for items listed under that keyword.
For instance, for the keyword "Silver Dollar" in the Coins category, the stock price for Silver Dollar would be calculuated by adding the total number of bids in the Bids column, dividing that by the # of items (17937) and multiplying that by 100. So, one could profit just by viewing its current listing.
2. Which VibeShares can we buy?
As of now, you can only buy stocks in any of the 1000 most popular Ebay keywords for many categories such as Consumer Electronics, Art, Collectibles, and Coins.
3. How do you buy and sell?
Simply use the trading toolkit displayed on the left side of every page. Type in the keyword, and the quantity. Choose buy, short sell, sell, or buy to cover.
Here I want to buy 100 shares of Ipod.
4. How is an VibeShare price calculated?
The price for a keyword measures the number of bidders compared to the # of auctions for the item as a %. For example, the stock price for Ipod is 210 Vibes - this means there are 210% more bidders than there are auctions for Ipods, or there is 2.1 bidders for every Ipod auction in Ebay. If there are more bidders, and the # of auctions stay the same, it means demand is increasing. If the number of auction decreases, then it means demand is also increasing (relative to supply).
If some dude decides to flood the market with Ipods, and the number of bidders remains the same, the stock price will drop.
5. Can I short sell?
Yes, you can short sell.
6. Do stock prices move up based on supply and demand?
Stock prices are solely calculated from its Ebay demand. If traders buy a lot of one specific stock, its price will not move up because of that. So, stock prices just reflect the current demand for that keyword on eBay.
7. When and how often are the prices updated?
Stock prices are updated at least once a day, around 10 pm EST. Prices may update more than once, but never do they lag more than a day behind.
8. Is this gambling/betting?
No, it is not. We don't require you to pay to play. It's free to join, and the money is always virtual.
9. Who created this?
Vibeshares was created by Henley Chiu as part of a honors project for NYU.
1. What is Day Change and Month Change?
The day change is the % change in price from yesterday's stock price. So, if the price of Ipod Nano went up from 100 to 200 Vibes, that's a 100% change ($100 change). Month Change is the % change in price from the 1st day of the current month.
2. What is Keyword rank?
The keyword rank tells you the how often that keyword was searched in eBay in that category. If the keyword rank of "Ipod" in Consumer Electronics is 4, it means Ipod was the 4th most searched term in eBay in the Consumer Electronics category.
